Let me begin by telling you that I am 59 years old and I have been cooking seriously for the last 40 years. I guess you could say I know my way around the kitchen. You COULD say that, but in this instance you would be wrong. I discovered something today via an email that I simply cannot believe I never noticed or heard about.
As I was reading the email, I had to go into the kitchen and check it out for myself. Now, I'm not trying to make excuses, but would ever look at the end of an aluminum foil or plastic wrap box? Not me.
You know when you try to pull some foil out and the roll comes out of the box? My box below had to be taped together because it finally broke from having the roll fall out so often. What I'm going to share with you may not cure the common cold, but it is startling, nevertheless. At the end of the box it says, "Press here to lock end." Okay, did you just run to the kitchen to check your own boxes? As you can see, my foil is not the nationally-known brand and it still has this message. How long has this little locking tab been there? My box of plastix wrap has one, too! I can't count the number of times the plastic wrap roll has jumped out when I was trying to cover something up.
Am I the only one who didn't know this? I'd love to hear from those of you who visit The Food of Love. Please leave me a comment before midnight EST this Friday, January 9, 2009 about this startling discovery of mine. I will randomly select a winner, who will receive this trio of "little black books."
Who says, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks?"
You got me. I did run into the kitchen to look at my aluminum foil box. :) Mine doesn't have the nifty message about locking the ends. Maybe because it's generic (think Wal-Mart, Great Value brand). I guess I'll just have to live with my aluminum foil falling out of the box.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I seem to remember noticing that was there years and years ago, and then forgetting the fact in my adult life when it would have been useful. It's amazing how much information we can miss on our packaging sometimes.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reminder.
Hmmm, I just checked my cling wrap and I don't have that feature. I'd sure like that feature though. :)
ReplyDeleteOh my --I am close in age to you Arlene and I never noticed that tab either! Will wonder neer cease -- thanks for pointing that tip out!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know one could lot the end of the boxes of foil, plastic wrap, etc. I'm always chasing that stuff--usually on the floor and have to either wash it off or toss it is the trash. Thanks for the info. L/H, Peg
ReplyDeletePS, I just looked. One box of foil says to lock here, the other box of foil plus the plastic wrap don't say anything about locking. In all honesty, I have to tell you that the last 2 items came from my parent's house after they passed away. I have no idea how old they
were, but still in good condition.
The foil box did not have that feature but the Saran Wrap did. This is a breakthrough moment. Now I really feel like I have missed the boat after all these years!!!
ReplyDeleteLOL....I had never noticed that either in all of my years of cooking until about a month ago. I had a friend who came over at the time i was cleaning up after dinner and putting leftovers in the fridge. When my tin foil popped out and went to the floor, she grabbed the box and said "Didnt you know about that tab". She laughed at me saying she couldnt believe i didnt know about it. Wow! Am i glad Im not the only one who didnt know!!
ReplyDeleteI have to check it the next time I buy some as I take it out of the box and put it into a special case I have fixed above the sink where it has a cutter. I wonder if my parchment paper has one as I keep that in the box.
ReplyDeleteDear Arlene,
ReplyDeletethanks for the tips but I checked mine and they don't say a word about it.Guess I should either live with it or change to the ones you are using now.I got mine from Real Canadian Superstore though.
Regards,
Susan
Arlene, I must be an old dog! But you have taught me something new today. I swear I never noticed the tab. DUH! Thanks for the tip. I'm 59 years young too my friend. We must be twins! On Elvis' birthday I say to you...Thank you, thank you very much!
ReplyDeleteI actaully heard this a while back.
ReplyDeleteFun tips you learn
hugs
Susan
I had no idea! The sad thing is the last time I used my saran wrap the roll came out and I thought "if they can send someone to the moon they should be able to make these rolls stay in the darn box!" Too funny! Thanks for the tip!
